CHAIR'S OVERVIEW

Dublin has transformed itself into a booming European city as the Celtic tiger continues to roar. Areas of the city are exemplars for sustainable regeneration - Temple Bar and the Docklands Development Area. Other areas retain the charm and tranquillity of a great Georgian city with rich street patterns and magnificent architectural heritage. At the same time Dublin grapples with the problems created by regeneration and growth - sink estates, traffic congestion, over-centralisation and the need for improved infrastructure.
We will start this year's conference by introducing the huge amount of development going on in Dublin but providing a thought-provoking alternative perspective suggesting that Dublin's Georgian heritage should be left untouched. We will then be inspired by Eddie O'Sullivan, fresh from motivating the Six Nations' championship Irish Rugby Team and chosen by Bertie Aherne to re-energise Fianna Fail, inspiring BCO members. We will also examine the Celtic Tiger Economy from the perspective of Ed Balls, MP, former chief economic adviser to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Geoff Mulgan - Director, The Young Foundation, ex-Head of the Prime Minister's Policy Unit and Ruairi Quinn, TD, former Finance Minister, leader of Fianna Gael and architect.
The theme for this year's conference is "Going Green" - Ireland, golf and environmental sustainability issues adding to our "green" theme. In particular, we want to examine the revitalisation of central business districts our heritage, corporate social responsibility issues in relation to sustainable agendas and the impact of global environmental issues on the office market.
Our tours and visits take us to all four corners of Dublin but include the endless attractions of the City centre.
All of this and the usual features of the conference - the reception will be held at the recently refurbished State Apartments at Dublin Castle and our after-dinner speaker Dara O Briain, well known for his comic genius will entertain us all on Friday evening.
Hope to see you there.
